Over the mountains - fog and rain

Thursday 3rd April

Well – scratch the Class Eco chain of hotels off the list. The bed was OK and we slept fine but the shared toilet and shower arrangement is not our cup of tea. And the face washer they gave as a bath towel….

Today we have moved on south to Carcassone. We first headed on a scenic drive NW and then S of Albi. There was some very pretty countryside to be seen and here and there chateaux. Not a lot of photo opportunities because the day started out overcast and with drizzle on and off. We again gave Dora a hard time deciding we didn’t like her choice of road – she continues to take it with good grace.

We managed to avoid the city of Castres this time around instead going around the city. Our previous trip through and Dora found us some interesting streets!
We took the winding road over the Pyrenees to Carcassone. Encouraging at the start of the road to see the word ‘ouvert’. Sadly no photos as the weather continued to be miserable and the fog was thick. There were only a few very small towns along the road so not even an opportunity for coffee.

We arrived in Carcassone at lunchtime and after doing our usual loop around the destination point we parked and headed into the walled village. An interesting tour through the castle and ramparts with more medieval history.  We then visited the Saint Nazaire church which is also inside the walls of the town.

As we left the village the rain started and it has continued to rain ever since. We had originally planned to do the village tomorrow but now we have done it today we will have a sleep in tomorrow and have a bit of a look around the area.

Tea tonight – Daube for me which was like a beef bourguignon and Rob had cassoulet with duck and pork sausage and white beans. Back at the hotel and cup of tea and kit-kat then time for bed.

  1. By not going on the tollways, you must be seeing some great sites and pretty villages. Wouldn't want to lift that bell and ring it by hand!!!! Hope you and Rob are well.
