No Dora - it says road Ferme (closed)

Saturday 5th April

Today has been another WOW day in the trip. We woke this morning to sunshine and a tiny bit of warmth from the sun, all boding well for our drive south.

Our drive to Spain was around 140km and took us through gorges and up and over mountains in the Pyrenees. We decided on the shorter route even though the road was twistier and not the major road and we thought there would be more to see. We were not disappointed. The gorge drive was pretty spectacular as it wound along the river with the road at times carved out of the overhanging rock, and very narrow. Glad it was a quiet day on the road and we didn't meet too much coming the other way.

Yes, the road goes through the mountains

Glad I'm not in a bus!

Under our original instruction to take the shortest route, Dora asked us to turn right at a road junction where we were greeted with the sign Ferme – Closed. Road ahead was closed due to snow. OK – so we’ll follow the other cars that seem to be aware of this and stick to the more major road.

This road took us up to the ski fields to a height of around 1600m. We were quite excited at our first sign of snow and stopped to take a photo, never imagining what photo opportunities were ahead. Around every corner the views just got better and better. Lots of photos and now I have to edit them.
Snow...

More snow...

And more snow.
We stopped on the way for a coffee in one of the ski villages – really pretty. Sat outside for coffee as one does in France but were glad to get back to the warm car.

The timeshare is really relaxed and very friendly staff. They are very helpful with everything and helped us to arrange hot air ballooning for tomorrow morning. There is another Australian couple here and we are going together. Today is our 31st wedding anniversary and we have just had dinner in the hotel restaurant with Roger and Gloria (from Adelaide).
