Defending the Castle

Tuesday 1st April

Today we have finally reached the Mediterranean at a place called Agde, but first up today was a visit to the Castle at Les Baux de Provence. To get to the castle you first had to walk up through the lovely village of Les Baux. Some beautiful shops – all for the tourist of course. Bought some of the local nougat for the journey.

The castle was built on the highest point in the area and looked out over the surrounding valleys. Again we ran into groups of schoolkids and the ones here were given ‘lessons’ in loading up and firing a trebuchet and also archery.

From there we headed to Agde via a place called Aigues Mortes. This was another walled village – you park the car outside and then just wander the streets in the village. Again this is geared to the tourist. We passed up a tour of the castle and medieval lessons – don’t want to overdo it – and just had lunch here.

We thought the drive to Agde would be more picturesque as it went right alongside the sea, but the land was totally flat and they’d built up alongside the road so we could see nothing. Tomorrow we’ll make sure we see something of the sea before we leave here.

We have moved away from the ‘cheap as chips’ chain of hotels that seems to cater to the tradie type business people, and tonight have come to a B&B hotel where we feel like we are staying in someone’s home. (and the internet here is brilliant compared to some we have had) The location is right on the river and we were able to cross to the other side of the river, where there are floating restaurants, for dinner tonight. We enjoyed a lovely seafood dinner; up there with the best meals we have had so far this trip.
