Its Wine o'clock Somewhere in the World

Thursday 22nd May

We've had a lovely day out today. The morning started out overcast and there had been rain overnight but it had cleared by the time we headed out.

Today was all about the wine. We headed north from Mulhouse into the Alsace wine area. Our first stop was a cave (winery) in the village of Sigolsheim which had been recommended to me by one of the ladies at the sewing group last week. Nice wine and reasonably priced she said. We didn't find out though as he was closed when we arrived. Not to worry, we just moved on to the next one in the village (there are plenty of options - you just can't visit them all). Lovely couple in the cave. The man spoke English and told us his son (21) is in Australia for 12months, currently in Sydney. Tasting done - tick, tick.

Moving right along to the village of Kientzheim. We started to go past here but noticed that it was a lovely medieval walled village. A beautiful village and not on any main tourist route. We visited one cave here but didn't buy anything.

No tick of approval from Odette and Alice.

Tower and fortified walls of Kientzheim.

Following along la Route des Vins Alsace we headed for the next village - Kaysersberg.  We were planning just coffee here but found this to be another fabulous village. There were lots of tourists here, a couple of bus loads, many different languages heard ( but mostly German - only 30k or so to the German border). Rob struck up a conversation with an english/german fellow, his wife, and their border collie Emma. Nice to be able to speak English with someone other than ourselves. We wandered up and down the main street enjoying the beautiful buildings and streetscapes and eventually had lunch here - it was very cold sitting outside at the restaurant but blankets are provided.

Love these bedsocks.

Lots of photos of street scenes and buildings in Kaysersberg.
It's hard to pick a selection. Enjoy!

Great photo with reflections.

Continuing along la Route des Vins Alsace next stop was Katzenthal. Tick, tick.

Kept following the signs for the wine trail passing through many small villages, each with multiple caves open for tasting, and winding our way between the vineyards. I can't recall all the names of the villages we passed through but there were at least 10 or so, only 5 or 6 k apart. All the names in this part of France are very german sounding as Alsace was originally part of Germany.

Finally tasting in the village of Gueberschwihr. Tick, tick, tick, tick.

Time to head back to base via the supermarket for dinner. Now for some cheese and bikkies and a little wine.
