Hip, hip, hippo day

Monday 1st July

Today was a half day of game driving in the Serengeti. An early start from the camp with the plan to be back for a hot lunch and a rest afternoon - for which we were all grateful. As we left camp we saw the hot air balloons rising - we discussed doing a balloon ride but decided the price was too high and we were not too sure that we would see any better groupings of animals from above.

Not far out from camp we saw a group of 5 (or maybe 6, hard to tell) lions on a grouping of rocks - called kopje. Many other animal sightings - photos below.

Cape buffalo - one of the big five.

Topi

Puff adder - sadly run over.

Posers.

Many hippos - they really pong in numbers.

Female ostrich - females are brown -
the males have the lovely black and white plumage.

More topi.

Kingfisher.

Up, up and away.

And a baby hippo -
who probably weighs more than 200kg already.

Peek-a-boo.

Red Mongoose.

Had a lovely relaxing afternoon - a much deserved nap and a little reading. I've brought a book with me but haven't opened it up until now. As we sat at the bar for pre dinner drinks, the camp was visited by 6 giraffes. Hyena and other grunty noises were heard during the night.
