Monday 24th April
Today has been a very enjoyable day. It's very cold still, only 7deg this morning and a very cold breeze. We started the day by heading in to the town of Sens to visit their undercover market, and find breakfast. The market was fabulous, so much fresh produce, and so beautifully presented. We bought fruit and some Chinese food for dinner (there is a microwave at the hotel, but we've had to buy bowls to heat the food).
This is where we bought our Chinese food for dinner. The lady there understood some English and said she has family in Perth. |
Breakfast - we popped into a brasserie but they weren't doing breakfast, but it's OK if we go and buy pastries at the market and bring them back to have with our coffee. We have found this once before in France - I don't know that they are so accommodating at home.
Visited the cathedral in Sens (we'll try to keep church photos to a minimum, but the stained glass is just stunning). This one dated back to 1100s - very well signed with information for foreigners. One thing it is known for is a place where Thomas Beckett spent some time in exile from England during the Reformation.
This may be hard to read - but looks like Saint Eustace had things tough. The bit that took my fancy was when he went to Egypt on the boat, the captain kept his wife as payment. |
Then visited the town of Villeneuve sur Yonne. The Yonne River is huge. No activity on the water this morning - too damn cold.
One of the original entrances to the fortified city of Villeneuve sur Yonne. |
Corner tower of the original walls. We walked around this tower and then the path followed the original moat - no water in it now. |
OK - so now it's lunchtime. Time to find a relais - a restaurant where you will find tradies and truckies at lunchtime. Dora had one within cooee on her list of restaurants so we headed there. Normally we just find them as we are driving around, usually near major road junctions, and parking lot full of vans and trucks. Set menu, 3 courses, and 14.50euro. Excellent value.
Amazing stained glass!
ReplyDeleteSounds like following the tradies is a great idea.
Wow. Eustace sure earned his Sainthood. Times were tough
