Clickety clack

Saturday 10th May

Decided today to do a trip to the beautiful medieval village of Eguisheim. We didn't realise until we plugged the details in to Dora that it was 150k and would take almost 2 hrs. Ah well! We are on holidays. A bit concerned that Dora took us south rather than north-east but we eventually figured out it was going to be quicker to go via the motorways, than almost due east where we wanted to go.

Our memories of Eguisheim were not disappointed. This village is a real gem. It is a circular village with a few concentric circles of streets. Its a fabulous place to aimlessly wander. Eguisheim was actually the birthplace of Pope Leo IX (1002-1054) (Bruno) who apparently walked to Rome with stick in hand and cape on his shoulders and was later named Pope.

There were a lot of tourists in town - several bus loads of Americans from a river cruise ship presumably on the Rhine which was not too far away, lots of German voices heard (Germany not far away), and quite a few English speakers heard. No Aussies that we detected.

Last time we visited there were lots of storks nesting on the high spots - not so many this time but maybe it is early in the nesting season. We found the restaurant that we ate at last time we were here, so repeated the experience for lunch. We had planned to taste a few wines but figured it was getting late in the day and we were faced with a 2 hr drive back.

We picked a different route back which was mostly off the motorways and a more interesting and relaxing drive (apart from the many small villages that dropped the speeds back to 50).

Lots of photos for your enjoyment.

Introducing Alice (shes a stork, not a duck), from Alsace.
Odette was feeling a bit lonely in the back seat so we found her a friend.

Part of the outer ring street.
Beautiful old timbered houses with many interesting angles
and lovely window boxes.

Nesting storks - not so many this trip
and we didn't hear the clack-clack of their beaks.

Beautiful decorated spire.

Dog of the day - lots to choose from today,
everyone had their dogs out for the day.

Just one of the many business shingles
- each one an artwork.

More street scenes.

As I type this Rob is in his element - he has found the TV coverage of the Spa 6hr endurance race. 28 minutes to go!
