Tuesday 20th May
Time to leave our beautiful apartment in Gundershoffen. This apartment had just about everything we needed, probably the best set up we have had.
We are again heading south, following along the eastern border of France. Overcast day today with the threat of rain. Fortunately the rain really did not eventuate though we got a couple of very light sprinkles.
We stopped on the way at the Centre European Resistance Deportees memorial. This place was an internment camp - the only one in France. There were lots of busloads of school kids at the memorial. They have kept some buildings, guard towers and fencing to show what the camp was like - but what we see now is not the reality of the past. Our picture of the reality is much more bleak, cruel and harsh. Quite upsetting really. Enough said. Out of respect I am only showing the memorial monument.
So let's move on to Riquewihr, a place we've been before and loved. Yes, our memories were correct. A lovely village - lots of tourists and a lot of different languages heard. (The past week it has been a lot of German voices.) After wandering in and out of laneways in the village we had a very late lunch. (The onion soup was great.)
Lots of photos of Riquewihr. |
Nesting storks - heard these ones clacking as we walked in to town. |
Lots of beautiful business 'shingles'. |
A day for dog walking. |
A long drive from there down the very busy motorway to Mulhouse. This is obviously the major truck route to Strasbourg. A bit nerve racking flying along at 130k passing truck after truck. We are now settled in Mulhouse for a few days - right next to the tram stop so we will see how we go getting to the automobile museum and the train museum. Might be a winery or two first tomorrow.
