Montmartre and Moulin Rouge

I’ll start putting dates on our posts as I don’t always get to post them as I type them (internet issues sometimes) and you might get several at once.

Friday 21st March

What a fabulous day we had. We had a slow start to the morning and when we were ready to head out found that it was raining. Only lightly so we headed off to Sacre Coeur. We are masters at the metro now – got the ticket system and the change of trains sorted.

Sacre Coeur basilica – what a beautiful looking church, both inside and out. It was relaxing to just sit inside (out of the cold and wet).  Rob braved the 322 steps to the top of the dome while I had a good look around the church.

We then had a walk around Montmartre and the weather picked up and was quite a bit warmer by lunchtime. We found 2 free art exhibitions which we took advantage of – didn’t buy any. There was a little piazza where there were several painters doing their thing. We just wandered and browsed – no real purpose except to find the pastry shop listed in Lonely Planet. Success – but no seating so we headed across the corner for lunch and this was the find of Paris. A fantastic meal and the best I had in Paris.  Back to the pastry shop where we bought pastries to have for dinner before our bus trip to see the night lights.  Really taken with this part of Paris and would love to spend more time here – maybe before heading home.

Our night time activities started with a bus tour of Paris to see it by night. A beautiful city by night and to see the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame lit up was stunning. Our tour also included a complimentary cruise on the Seine as we weren’t booked at the Moulin Rouge till the 11pm show. Moulin Rouge – absolutely fabulous and I am so glad we booked the show. As I commented on facebook though there was plenty of eye candy for the men but none for the women.  We were seated with 2 pommie couples who had come to Paris for the weekend after dropping the kids at school Friday morning and catching the 10.30 train. We are just so far away from it all which I guess is why we are making the most of this trip.

  1. When you get back to Montmarte don't miss Marche Saint Pierre located at the base of the stairs to the Sacré Coeur in Montmarte, Paris' largest textile market
