A magic day

Thursday 14th June

We woke this morning to brilliant sunshine and stunningly blue skies. Today's drive took us to an absolutely beautiful waterfall - the Cascade Fontcouverte. The road to the waterfall doesn't go anywhere else and we were surprised to see just how many cars were parked at the waterfall. We didn't see too many people on the 300m walk to the waterfall so I guess they were all headed off on different walks from the car park.

We think in Australia we are real outdoorsy people but I think the French are even more outdoorsy than us. All over this area we see signs pointing to walking tracks and the map we have of the area has far more walking tracks on it than roads.

After our short 'randonneuring' to the waterfall we headed back to Briancon and visited our Italian restaurant from Tuesday where we repeated our lunch order  - I know, not terribly imaginative, but it was a great meal.

Yum, yum. Profiteroles.
We have seen a few signs across the road here advertising a bike ride going up 3 of the Cols - each above 2000 metres. We visited one on Monday and decided to drive to another on the way home - Col de Granon. What an amazing view from the top! This road doesn't go any further - you are there for the view; unless you are parking the car and doing one of the walks.

This valley is where we came up from
- our village is in this valley about 10k further to the right.

There was a road continuing on from where we stopped but it was military property.
In the distance we could see this fort.

We followed this river back from the waterfall and caught these kayakers in action.
All the rivers in this area seem to be quite fast flowing
and perfect for kayaking/rafting. With the better weather the past 2 days
we have seen lots of vars loaded up with kayaks heading for
launching places along the rivers.

We had a great day with sunshine, warmer weather - beautiful blue skies.

  1. Got to love sunshine, blue sky and snow-topped mountains!

Still waiting to see you go white-water rafting. Or kayaking.
