Marseille - 300 days of sun? It's raining.

Wednesday 30th May

We got information at the hotel on how to get to the city without taking the car. Ten minute walk to the bus, 30 minute bus ride, then the metro and there we were at the Vieux Port. We've not been to Marseille before so decided the best way to see the city was the hop on - hop off bus. It was probably one of the better hop on-off bus rides we've done, and made me glad we were doing it by bus, not car. Boy some of those roads are narrow even for 2 cars, but a car and a bus - breathe in!

The fish market at the old port.
We were probably there towards the end of the selling period
as there were only a few stalls left.

Unfortunately it rained this morning so some photos weren't possible but we still saw everything from the top deck. After the bus ride we wandered the old section of Marseille, the Panier, and there were some lovely streets and corners to investigate (in the rain!).

Along the port front.

Basilica Notre Dame de la Garde.
This church sits high on a hill overlooking the city.

Odette came for the ride.

Narrow alleys in the Panier - the old district.

Rabbit in the window box - no, he wasn't real.

After lunch in the Panier we visited the Cathedrale de la Major which is relatively new being built in the 1800s, but a stunning church. The colours in the marble were beautiful.

Following that a walk through the Fort Saint-Jean area before heading back to the hotel. A bit tired and footsore tonight so an early night is planned ready to visit the Basilica Notre Dame de le Garde in the morning. I wonder if it will be as impressive inside as it is sitting up on the hill above Marseille. Hopefully the rain has gone and we can enjoy the sun.

  2. Hope the sun has come out. I love your blog and must congratulate you on your research. I find it hard to read up much before I have been to a place and then afterwards regret the places I missed!

    1. Thanks Kate. Sometimes we do no research before landing somewhere and we pick it up as we go. There are lots of places I'm sure we've missed but you don't know what you don't know.☺
