Last one out of Venice, please turn out the lights!

Sunday 8th June

A reasonably long drive today as we headed for a beach resort near Venice. We met a couple at a B&B a couple of nights ago who told us to stay near this place and then catch the inexpensive ferry to Venice. We have timed it so we are not going to Venice on the weekend in the hope that it is a little less busy. The drive was fairly quiet until we got to within about 50k of Venice – then the traffic started, heading the way we had come. It appeared that the whole of Venice was headed to the beach for the day. The traffic was backed up for kilometres. So glad we were going the other way.

Our travel took us around the north side of Venice and down the small peninsula on the eastern side. We weren’t spared the traffic though. As we got closer to our destination we were also caught in bumper to bumper traffic. Not as bad as we had seen on the other side of Venice though. The man at the hotel told us that holidays had started in Germany this weekend and all the Germans had flocked in.  We are staying at a hotel and they have actually given us one of their apartments so we have space to swing a cat or two – and 2 spare beds if anyone wants to come for the night.

This afternoon we just wandered down to the beach and made use of our ‘parasol and 2 deckchairs included’. The beach is just covered in these umbrellas and there is very little ‘free’ beach area. By 7pm most people had left the beach and they were folding the umbrellas. We had dinner tonight at a restaurant nearby and the main language we heard at the restaurant was German. Must have a look at the map and see just how close we are.
The beach at Cavallino Treporti. The sand is not as white
as it was at the beach at Guilianova.

Rob called this a 'pretend tall ship'.
