Crop country

Wednesday 11th July

A lovely drive today heading through mostly cropping country. The farmers are very busy at the moment with lots of hay being cut, or already cut, and wheat being harvested. There is lots of farm machinery on the roads. You had to take care coming around corners and meeting a tractor or harvester coming the other way. Other crops still growing are corn, and sunflowers, adding plenty of colour to the landscape.

Fields of sunflowers everywhere contrasting with the fields of green corn
and gold coloured harvested fields.

Along the way - Chateau de Montigny, 12th to 16th century.

If we weren't in cropping country, we were passing through some beautiful green forests. We also passed through many lovely old villages with typical stone houses, and late into the day we passed into the area where you find a lot of half timbered houses.

One village we passed through, Auberive, had a lovely abbey, and the river passed through the town with a riverside walk. Just outside this village we saw a sign to 'route touristique' so we took the scenic drive through the forest and found a deer reserve.

Auberive - river walk through the grounds of the abbey.

Looks like this is the closest we are going to get to seeing a deer in the wild.

It was a lovely day on the road with minimal traffic and plenty of interesting scenery and things to look at.
